One advantage of performing with guitar through a laptop is the ability to use plug-ins, in addition to pedals. As many amazing and out there pedals as there are, there are still some sounds you just can’t get from hardware. Too, there is the level of control—static and evolving—over parameters, available with plug-ins, but not yet with pedals.

Here is a list of seven plug-ins (okay, a couple are suites, but seven sounds sexy) I have used over the years in recording and performance. They range from vintage emulations to spectral and granular effects, and best of all, they are all FREE!

I use these plug-ins hosted by Ableton Live on a Mac running 10.6.8. I can’t guarantee they will work on Mountain Lion or the latest Windows, but hopefully at least some of them will.

If they work for you, please donate something to the developers; they have created wonderful music making tools and should be rewarded with coin of the realm. Also, where appropriate, check out their paid products, as, for many, the freeware is a kind of advert for the stuff for sale.

Sound clips are grouped together on Sound Cloud (Warning: unmastered, so the volume fluctuates from clip to clip). Individual descriptions below.

Tal-Togu’s TAL-Dub(Mac or Windows)

Tal Togu is programmer Patrick Kunz’s nom-de-developer. He offers an amazing range of free virtual effects and synthesizers. They are all worth checking out, but the TAL-Dub vintage delay effect is a must-have.

Using the Damp and Resonance knobs, you can evoke classic tape and dub effects, but with two independent (or linked) delay lines, it offers much more than retro sounds. With the resonance cranked it will self-oscillate and you can play the resulting pitch like a Theremin by MIDI assigning the Damp control to a knob, fader, or Source Audio Hot Hand MIDI-EXP Controller.

He says that this plug is no longer supported, but it is downloadable.

Sound Clip: I just played one distorted chord. Left and right feedback controls were linked to a hardware MIDI controller, as was the Damp control.

Ignite Amps TS-999(Mac or Windows)

Ignite makes hardware amplifiers and effects, as well as virtual amplifier and effect plug-ins. This overdrive plug-in is natural sounding and dynamic. It works brilliantly with Live’s Amp and Cabinet plug-ins.

See top of post for front view

Sound Clip: I played a part through an Ableton Live plug-ins, Amp and Cabinet, set for clean. First you will hear it without the 999 and then with. Note how the distortion reacts to the strength of my picking. I can play clean chords by just lightening up.

Michael Norris Sound Magic Spectral Suite(Mac only)

Michael Norrisis a Wellington-based composer, software developer and music theorist. His free suite of plug-ins offers a wide range of effects currently unavailable with hardware.

The term “spectral,” as applied to effects, refers to the fact that the effect is applied differently to different frequency bands of the audio material. For example: Spectral delays allow you to delay a particular frequency range of a signal while leaving the rest of the spectrum dry.

SoundMagic Spectral is a FREEWARE suite of 24 Audio Unit plug-ins that implement real-time spectral processing of sound. They allow enormous audio processing control and creativity, from audio files or live audio. SoundMagic Spectral builds on the work of the OS 9 software known as SoundMagic DSP, taking it to even more exotic sonic realms.

Included are: Spectral Averaging, Spectral Bin Shift, Spectral Blurring, Spectral DroneMaker, Spectral Emergence, Spectral Filterbank, Spectral Freezing, Spectral Gate and Hold, Spectral Gliding Filters, Spectral Granulation, Spectral Harmonizer, Spectral Partial Glide, Spectral Pitch Shift, Spectral Pulsing, Spectral Shimmer, Spectral Shuffle, Spectral Stretch, Spectral Tracing, Spectral Weave, Chorus, Comb Filter Bank, Grain Streamer, Idee Fixee, and Mr Filterbank.

I have had great fun with the Dronemaker and Idee Fixee, but all have enormous potential for sonic mangling in real time.

Sound Clip: A short phrase played into Idee Fixee and captured is on the right, while a chord pad created with Dronemaker is on the left.

Gsi Watkat(Mac or Windows)

Another vintage delay clone, this one from Genuine Soundware.

A famous British Tape-Echo Unit, the Copicat was the first repeat-echo machine manufactured as a compact unit. Designed by Charlie Watkins in 1958, thousands of this model were sold by the all around the world; most of them are still running.

WatKat is a digital “clone” of a Wem Watkins “Custom” Copicat. It sounds very lo-fi, noisy, and irregular.

This is a unique sounding delay—think early Dave Gilmour.

Sound Clip: First dry, then with just Head 1, then with just Head 3.

KTGranulator(Mac or Windows)

Developed by Koen Tanghe at Smartelectronix, the KTGranulator is a free delay line granulator. It was inspired by the great DLGranulator effect in Ross Bencina’s AudioMulch.

Incoming (mono) sound is fed into a delay line from which small pieces of various durations and at different moments in the past are selected. Each piece is then amplified, transposed and enveloped to form a “grain,” Each grain is also randomly panned and the whole mix is sent out to a stereo output stream. Feedback of the grain output back into the delay line is also provided, and the delay line can be frozen so that the grains are only taken from what is currently stored in the delay line.

Useful for epic pads ala Eventide Harmonizer, or crazy granular effects.

Sound Clip: Pads created with the KT

And here is a composition of mine under my alias, prehab, making use of the KT Granulator

Soundhack Suite(Mac or Windows)

Tom Erbe started creating free tools for electronic music and audio in 1991 with SoundHack and more lately with a series of plugins and externals for Mac, Linux and Windows.

For the more tech-oriented: SoundHack Delay Trio is a group of three plugins derived from the same basic delay algorithm: a hermite interpolated delay line with variable modulation, and a feedback loop with dc blocking and saturation. Pitch shifting is achieved with a dual head crossfading delay (ala Eltro Tempophon/Dennis Gabor/Pierre Schaeffer phonogene) and is decidedly low-fi. The saturating feedback also allows them to be great drone and noise generators.

The three plugins are +delay (classic delay effects),+pitchdelay, (essentially the same plugin with controls oriented toward pitch shifting), and +bubbler (a granular delay in which grains are pulled from the delay line with randomized start time, delay time and pitch shift value).

Not your vintage delays, these three will create sounds unavailable in classic hardware or virtual models thereof.

Sound Clip: Separate clips featuring the same arpeggio, one run through +pitchdelay and one through +bubbler.

AraldFX Stormgate1(Mac or Windows)

If you work with grooves and rhythm, this is a no-brainer. Stormgate1 turns simple guitar notes and chords into chopped up, groove-a-licious patterns that can be user created. A swing feature ensures that your parts will fit with any drumbeat.

Sound Clip: Distorted guitar played through Stormgate1. Patterns are changing automatically.

There they are: a plethora of great-sounding audio modifiers, many of them used by professionals. Hopefully they will work in your system. If so, be sure to tip your developer, he is working hard for you.

I guess you would have to agree with me that the best way to polish your vocal recording or a vocal sample is to sprinkle some effects, just like the way you would sprinkle a reasonable amount of ingredients on your food. If done right, it sounds delicious right, yum yum 😉

Vocal effects are no exception to the ingredient perspective, you need to add a reasonable amount of effects to make them sound lively, and enjoyable to the listeners.

Don’t get me wrong, I ain’t saying you should stack effects upon effects on your vocal samples, too much of everything is bad. That said, let us look at the best free awesome VST effects plugin in the music production scene.

Let’s ride on…

1.) AegeanMusic – PitchProof

Ambient Vsts

If you haven’t heard of PitchProof, then, you are definitely missing out, this is like the secret tool I use on Vocals but it wasn’t even developed for Vocal, it was actually designed to work on monophonic signals such as guitar solos, but I’ll give you a tip on how I have been using it:

You don’t want to apply it in realtime, what you should do instead is to first select the key of the harmony, then you turn the Blend knob all the way to the right; wet e.g:

Export the vocal result, add whatever effects plugins you gat on your toolbox (vocal, flangers, etc) to spice up the pitched vocal, and then stack it on top of the original vocal. Boom, you have something unique!

Note: You don’t have to always push it all through the wet side as this might cause artifacts, just experiment and stick with what works for you.

You can even export more vocal, and maybe this time, you can try by reducing the detune knob, anyways, experiment until you get your preferred test.

That said, let’s look at some of the features of PitchProof:

The Blend control knob would let you adjust the level of pitch shift, while the Pitch drop-down menu lets you select pitches like +7 or -7, or harmonies which are intelligent pitch-shift effects.

Moreover, there are also some options at the bottom of the PitchProof plugin which give you the option to switch between stereo and mono; mono could save your CPU, while the stereo option could cause a resource hog if used on multiple inserts.

Transient Fix can be switch on or off to spice things up a little!

Possible Harmony Options:
HarmonyInfo
2ndDissonant harmonies
3rdThe Typical Major/minor Chord Harmony
4thThe same as the +5 semitones setting except a few notes are flat.
5thThe Same as The +7 Semitones Setting Except the Last Note of The Major Scale Is Flat Making It “diminished”.
6thA nice-sounding alternative to typical harmony intervals.
7thDissonant 7th Chord Sounds.

2.) Auburn Sounds – Graillon

This is an autotune VST plugins designed and developed by Auburnsounds. This plugin is superb in the way it handles pitch correction.

3.) JHudStudio – Vocal King

Vocal King helps glue the vocal in a mix, and it comes preloaded cool parameters, that could help in customizing the audio signal of a vocal track.

The Pres Compressor knob helps in bringing out the clarity of a vocal, so, by turning up the gain of the Pres Comp brings out the presence in the vocal along with giving it a smooth compression. On the other hand, the Low cut, Tighten, and the Bass knob compliment the Pres Comp in taking out muddy frequencies without the vocal sounding too thin.

I also love playing with the Crispy knob as it sprinkles some sparkles to the audio signal.

Features:

  • Help vocals to stand out in a mix by giving them amazing presence, clarity, and compression. Can easily work on any other content.
  • Acts like are preamp giving the signal a strong boost.
  • Easy to use interface for fast results.
  • Easy to read meters
  • Very CPU efficient compared to other types of plugins.
  • It can be used on many other audio sources as well.

System Requirements

  • Vocal King supports MAC/Windows/32bit/64bit/VST2/VST3/AU. Supports MAC OS X 10.7 / Windows 7 and higher. Older systems may not work.

4.) Sonic Anomaly – Vola

Vola is a Voice Optimized Leveling Amplifier made for broadcast voice dynamics processing, it also works with different kinds of audio material, like drums, percussive instrument, and synth pads.

5.) g200kg – KeroVee

This is a pitch correction VST plugin tool and has strengthened to support natural pitch correction.

This tool is handy and can perform different and various types of voice effects, for example, a conversion of the male voice to a female voice and vice versa.

KeroVee comes bundled with useful parameters for the effectiveness of the auto-tuning process, Parameter includes:

  • Scale Button: This is for specifying the scale you want to tune. Setting a wrong scale would result in an awful result, in a simple sentence, Know your scale before you go into this one
  • TuneSpeed: This will allow you to set the speed of correcting the pitch.
  • Nuance: This is one of the best and lovely parameters, you can use this to set a fine vibrato of the original sound, use this to create all sorts of weird effects.
  • Amount: Set to zero (0) if you want no correction, setting to 100 will result in full correction of the pitch
  • and many more parameters like Transpose option, master volume, etc.

System Requirements

  • A compatible host program that supports the VST formats

6.) Martin Eastwood – Duet

Have you heard those natural double effects in some tracks! Do you wonder how those are created? I guess yes 😉

Let me introduce to you – Duet, a double-tracking effect designed to enhance your audio sample be it vocal or even instruments, Duet is well capable of sparkling them up. The way Duet work is by pitch-shifting both the left and right inputs individually using a novel synchronous overlap and add technique, allowing pitch to be manipulated in real-time while still maintaining the time duration of the audio.

One thing I love about Duet is the way it can accurately create the illusion of multi-voices and adds varied texture to the mix. Experiment with Duet to see how it works.

8.) Distorque – Azurite

Azurite is a vocal effect by Distorque which is built for multi-voice chorus with a focus on rich sounds and versatile controls.

According To Distorque:

My goal in designing it was to make as flexible a chorus as possible without losing great tones and ease of use. The result is an effect that will be handy for producers, guitarists, and glitch lovers alike.

One of the great features of this plugin is the way you can create multiple simultaneous voices. Each of these voices can be further customized with their own delay line that is modulated by a separate LFO. Adding multiple voices leads to a thicker, smoother, and less wobbly tone. It also makes vivid stereo spreading possible with a mono signal.

The voice control helps you to choose how many voices you want for the chorus, e.g one, two, four, or eight.
